How the cannibalism of the Nile perch provides a pithy metaphor for the West's ecological destruction. An Oscar-nominated Storyville film.

Darwin's Nightmare
10.00pm BBC4
Anyone inspired by Live 8 should watch this grim picture of the reality of international trade with Africa.
Lake Victoria once teemed with native African aquatic life, but the introduction of Nile perch around 1960 changed all that. This disturbing film demonstrates how the giant perch has distorted economic life in Tanzania. Now it's fished for cash and exported to Europe from an airstrip littered with the skeletons of crashed aircraft. Local fishermen and Russian pilots are at the top of the food chain but most languish in terrible poverty. Rough and ready in places, this heartbreaking film makes it clear exactly how the West lives off the fat of Africa. (Geoff Ellis)
