A spectacular performance of Isaac Albeniz's lost opera in Madrid's state-of-the-art Teatro Real. David Wilson-Johnson stars as Merlin, Stuart Skelton as Arthur and Eva Marton as Morgan Le Fay. Jose de Eusebio conducts.
Written 101 years ago, Merlin was intended as the first part of an Arthurian trilogy. Albeniz teamed up with amateur poet Francis Burdett Money-Coutts - who offered him a pension for life if the composer used him as a librettist- but died while working on part two, so the opera was never completed. Consequently this magical production is the world stage premiere.
