Tonight's concert celebrates Glasgow-bom composer Oliver Knussen's 50th birthday with a performance of his two children's operas based on Maurice Sendak 's picture books Higglety, Pigglety, Pop! and Where the Wild Things Are. Knussen himself conducts the London Sinfonietta, of which he is the music director, and a star cast of singers which includes soprano Rosemary Hardy, mezzo-soprano Mary King and bass-baritone David Wilson-Johnson. Introduced by Charles Hazlewood, live from the Royal Albert Hall. Also broadcast on Radio 3 and BBCi.

Live coverage from the annual World of Music, Arts and Dance Festival from its customary home at Rivermead in Reading, Berkshire, presented by Andrea Oliver. Now in its 20th year, Womad brings together entertainers from all over the globe, and has established itself as one of the friendliest fixtures of the festival season. This first programme of the weekend features Los Angeles dance outfit Ozomatli, the French-Algerian singer-songwriter Souad Massi, O Rappa from Brazil and Mali's desert-dwelling nomads, the Tartit Ensemble.
