In February 1975, Jill Ruckelshaus is appointed chairwoman of a national commission to honour women and urge ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. But she has to contend with Phyllis Schlafly, who despite being a Republican remains steadfastly against ratification and attempts to recruit the ultra-conservative Lottie Beth Hobbs and her evangelical supporters to protest against the ERA.
