Borlu faces the demons of Katrynia's past as anyone linked to the third city is at risk.

Borlu is caught up in a dangerous underworld. As he faces the demons of Katrynia's past, anyone connected to the fabled third city, Orciny, is increasingly at serious risk.

Borlu is interrogated by the Ul Qoman Militsya and is promptly taken to the Militsya HQ. He broke the terms of his agreement with Dhatt and she is furious - his possible deportation is out of her control. She's got him under constant surveillance. Dhatt knows this case means more to Borlu than being just another murder.

Corwi calls Borlu and tells him that Major Syedr is in bed with Gorse, CEO of multinational mining company Sear & Core. Not the kind of thing Syedr makes public information. Finally, Borlu and Dhatt come face-to-face with Bowden. Borlu wants to know about Bowden's relationship with Mahalia - he sees him as a key suspect. Bowden says he had an argument with Mahalia on the night she went missing. It looks like anyone with a connection to Orciny is under threat. Bowden remembers where he's seen Borlu before - Katrynia had time for his theories.

Borlu and Dhatt head to Bowden's apartment. It's been ransacked, covered with the same glyphs that Borlu saw in the cave, and now Bowden has gone missing.
