Wartime drama. Experienced Lieutenant Walker (Robert Mitchum) leads a unit of raw recruits from Tunisia to Italy during the Second World War.

US journalist Ernie Pyle observes an infantry unit under experienced Lieutenant Walker, played by Robert Mitchum in his only Oscar-nominated role, gaining gritty insight as the raw recruits progress from Tunisia to Italy during the Second World War.
