Using his own garden layout to demonstrate, Alan shows how to establish drought-tolerant shrubs in gravel beds. He then offers tips on dead-heading perennials that have completed their flowering period, before sharing tips on preserving and drying out herbs. Also in the programme, Valerie Waters visits a garden near Oban in Scotland which was recently found to be situated on underlying bedrock that produces and promotes an array of self-seeding plants. Dr Paul Taylor also presents an item on flowering plants; he visits Dulwich Picture Gallery where he looks back at an eighteenth century exhibition in which Dutch flower paintings were centrally featured. Dr Taylor explains how paintings of flowering plants were highly sought after during a period know as 'tulip-omania,' when tulip bulbs were fetching such huge prices, that it was cheaper to purchase a painting in comparison to buying certain flowering varieties.
