Giles Coren and Sue Perkins step back to 1975 to learn some self-sufficient skills. Here, they try their hands at making their own wine and pickled eggs.

In celebration of The Good Life's 35th birthday, Giles Coren and Sue Perkins step back in time to 1975 to find out what it takes to make the self-sufficient dream a reality. Based in an ordinary suburban street and inspiring themselves with archive clips of the comedy, Giles and Sue try to recreate the Goods' world - from growing vegetables in the garden to trying to generate their own power and making their own clothes.

Midway through their adventure, Giles and Sue question whether the rewards of a self-sufficient life could ever outweigh the hard graft. Despite their part-time efforts, the vegetables in the garden seem to be coming along and the chickens and goats have settled in, but the honeymoon period is definitely over and Giles and Sue begin to realise that if you had to live the Good Life 24/7, 365 days of the year, it might not be quite so good after all.  

Things get off to a farcical start with the arrival of two very mischievous Gloucester Old Spot pigs and deteriorate even further as Giles and Sue try their hands at making their own wine and pickled eggs. To boost their vegetable supply, they decide to take on an allotment, but eventually have to call in Gardeners' World regular Joe Swift to help them tackle an infestation of thistles. 

Broadcaster John Humphrys pops in to share his unhappy experience of cattle farming in Wales and celebrity cook Sophie Grigson pays a visit to help expand the pair's culinary repertoire beyond omelettes. Having given themselves a bit of a makeover, Giles and Sue enjoy a day out at the annual allotment show, ambitiously entering their undersized potatoes and aubergines in the best veg competition.
