Birding with Bill Oddie

Series 3

Episode 6: Israel

Duration: 30 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Two Northern Ireland (Analogue)Latest broadcast: on BBC Two Northern Ireland

Bill takes a winter trip to the Holy Land, travelling from the Red Sea in the south to Galilee in the north. He starts off in Eilat, which is full of exotic creatures such as yellow-vented bulbuls, Palestine sunbirds and Indian house crows, and more familiar ones such as house sparrows and white wagtails. Then, it is off to the pumping station above the town to see Lichtenstein's sandgrouse. Bill meets the man who knows more about Israel's birds than any other, Hadoram Shirihai. Hadoram comes up trumps with a huge female Saker falcon, one of the rarest birds to winter in Israel. After watching three different species of kingfisher, Bill takes a trip into the Golan Heights in search of Griffon vultures. Finally, Bill has the experience of a lifetime, as he watches thousands of cranes flying in to roost for the night. Show less
