Jools welcomes grime originator, rapper and songwriter Kano, fresh from his groundbreaking performance at Glastonbury Festival’s Live at Worthy Farm as well as filming the latest series of hit Netflix series Top Boy, which sees him dust off his acting shoes to reprise the role of Sully. Having made his Later debut in 2007 performing with Damon Albarn, Kano has since performed twice on the show and sifts through the archives to share his favourite performances through the years.
Two Later debuts finish the series, starting with Sheffield’s Rebecca Taylor aka Self Esteem, who began her musical career as one half of indie duo Slow Club and has since released her acclaimed debut solo album Compliments Please in 2019 followed by her 2020 EP Cuddles Please. She performs her latest single I Do This All The Time, a part-spoken-word ode to all the frustrations and societal norms that cloud expectations of ‘correct’ womanhood.
And another debut comes from southeast London’s rising contemporary soul and funk purveyor Joel Culpepper, who performs a number from his forthcoming debut album Sgt Culpepper that explores the power of community, mingling self-reflection with wider social commentary and a collaborative record that he says was 'inspired by how the UK jazz and grime scene supports each other'.
