Win the Wilderness: Alaska

Series 1

Episode 2

Duration: 58 minutes

First broadcast: on BBC Two EnglandLatest broadcast: on BBC Two Northern Ireland HD

The second episode sees the competition heat up as the British couples face up to the next of Duane and Rena’s daunting tests.

Separated from their partners, with the men in one group and the women in the other, the couples must prove their worth by safely navigating through an area of untamed Alaskan wilderness. The couple that impresses most on this intimidating test will earn a flight to see Duane and Rena’s home on Ose Mountain and the opportunity to try to make it onto their shortlist.

Closely observed by Duane and Rena’s right-hand man CJ, who is also joined by a local Search and Rescue expert, the test begins with the two groups being taken upriver to a dense forest which they must find safe passage through. In the men’s group, Theo quickly feels of the frustration of not being listened to, while two of the older men, Mark and Pete, quietly show their leadership qualities. After some initial disagreement about the best direction to take, the women’s group get off to a slow start. However they soon pick up the pace and, after safely finding a way through the forest, farmer Emily leads from the front as the group crosses a vast expanse of Arctic tundra. Both groups eventually make it to the end marker located high on a ridge line.

The next day, CJ passes on his observations to Duane and Rena, who decide which couple deserves to be the second to fly to their home. While one happy couple sets about making the 200-mile trip to Ose Mountain, the rest of the group head to a local gun range for a shooting assessment. Firearms are an important part of Alaskan life, and one that the couples will have to come to terms with if they are named as the new owners of Ose Mountain. After learning more about Alaskan attitude to firearms, the group head to the gun range to learn the basics and see who has the best shot.

Meanwhile, on Ose Mountain, Duane and Rena waste no time in putting the successful couple to work on their 200m, hand-cleared lawn. Under the Ose’s watchful gaze, the couple have the next 24 hours to impress their hosts and demonstrate that they potential to take over Ose Mountain. If they are successful, Duane and Rena will put them on the shortlist to take over their home and ask them to return to the wilderness camp. If they fail to impress, the Oses will send them back to the UK.

Over dinner, Duane and Rena interrogate the couple’s ability to take over their home whilst juggling their other commitments back in the UK. After a tense exchange, the couple go to bed thinking they may have blown their chances. Only in the morning do they find out Duane and Rena’s verdict and whether their dream of owning a new home in Alaska is over. Show less
