Leslie Howard , Bette Davis
Alan Squier , a poet-intellectual wandering across Arizona, is befriended by a waitress, Gabrielle Maple , in an isolated petrol station-cafe. Alan leaves with a couple who have stopped for petrol but their car is held up by an escaped gangster, Duke Mantee. Trekking back to the cafe, they find Gabrielle a hostage in the hands of the killer. Humphrey Bogart 's impressive portrayal of Mantee was destined to be a turning-point in his career.
