Gordon Cheviot is suspected of the murder of Arnold Hedges. Fergus Ryder, who doesn't believe Cheviot is guilty, is trying to find the real murderer, when he discovers Hedges' body in the boot of Cheviot's car. Ryder sees Joe Denzel, who was owed a great deal of money by Hedges and accuses him of being involved in Hedges' murder. Later that evening, Denzel is visited by Arthur Boone, a private detective, who not only accuses Denzel of being involved but also tries to blackmail him. Denzel agrees to meet Boone later with the money. When Boone gets to the rendezvous he is shot dead.
