1: Chichester, Sussex
Seven years ago Alec Clifton -Taylor began the first of a series of programmes about the architecture of small
English towns. It was a great success. A second and third series followed, perhaps reaching larger audiences than had ever watched architecture on television.
A fourth was being planned when Alec Clifton-Taylor died last month. He said that making TV programmes gave him enormous pleasure. It could scarcely equal the pleasure that he gave to his public.
In tribute to a great enthusiast, and a scholarly and deeply knowledgeable man, BBC2 is repeating all 18 programmes beginning with his first - Chichester, where 'brick and flint give the town its essential character, the right materials in the right place, a perfect pattern of English building.'
