Prince Charles Edward Stewart is now at Crackenthorp's inn, as are his strangely mixed supporters, with Hugh Redgauntlet, the unwilling Darsie Latimer, and, under lock and key,
Darsie's friend Alan Fairford. Fairford is now aware that Latimer and Lilias are brother and sister and is about to declare his love for the girl when Cristal Nixon interrupts their conversation, closely followed by Redgauntlet with the news that there is rumour of a traitor in their midst. A council is held in an upper room of the inn.
Meanwhile Cristal Nixon has been sent to bring Nanty Ewart to Redgauntlet. Ewart discovers that Nixon is willing, even eager, to betray his master and slays him with a mighty blow of his sword. At the council, which the Prince has now joined, Lilias reveals written evidence of treachery.
