Surrogates 1967-79. From Africa to South America, both sides in the Cold War used surrogate countries to wage ideological, and sometimes physical, conflict. In both and 1973. the Middle East was engulfed by war as the US gave military aid to Israel and the Soviets armed Syria and Egypt.

Communist regimes and grappled with the continuing debacle in Vietnam and political scandal overWatergate.
