First of three programmes.
When the burial of one of the early High Kings of England was discovered in 1939, contemporary events obscured its initial sensation. But the site of Sutton Hoo , now a national monument, has continued to fascinate both public and scholars alike.
Five years ago, archaeologist Martin Carver led the new series of excavations to help unravel these mysteries. Today's film chronicles a year of investigations using the latest techniques of archaeology. The search for a king had become a search for the kingdom.
