Horizon: Survival of the Weakest

on BBC Two England

How much does your new born baby weigh? In England each year about 50,000 babies are born weighing less than 5 1/2 lbs. Do they have a chance of survival? Will they lead a normal life?
Babies are light at birth because they are born too soon or because they have not grown properly in the womb. In either case they run the risk of being seriously handicapped for the rest of their lives. Tonight's programme shows the enormous efforts doctors are making to protect the health and life of these tiny patients just before and after birth.
