Victor Vasare!y

on BBC Two England

Victor Vasarely has long been creating optical illusions. In the early 50s he began to occupy himself with movement, real or simulated. This was later called ' Op Art' and VASARELY is acknowledged as its principal exponent.
He was born in Hungary in 1908 and since 1934 has lived in France. He started as a commercial artist and designed many striking, innovative advertisements, before he earned his living as a painter.
Jean-Christophe Averty , a French film-maker, worked in close collaboration with Vasarely and they managed to achieve an astonishing insight into the way Vasarely's effects work. The film won the Grand Prix at the Asolo Film Festival.
The third of four programmes on European art and artists.
A fascinating and impassioned programme, which will enable many more viewers to get to know Vasarely better ... (LE PROVENCAL) Thededicatedanduncompromising Vasarely is an artist of great stature.
