A series of six personal views by Jonathon Porritt , former director of Friends of the Earth.
5: One World? 'We in the rich north are stacking the odds against the Third World by forcing upon them patterns of trade and development that cannot be sustained.' Porritt argues that the Third World instead needs sustainable development, as shown by the Central American republic of Costa Rica, which abolished its army, introduced family planning and is protecting much of its forest and farmland from destruction. Discussing these ideas are the Rt Hon Chris Patten , MP, Secretary of State for the Environment, Frances Cairncross of The Economist and Paul Ekins , Third World expert. Producer Paul Simons
