A series about how we live now.
What is the weekend country cottage - a status symbol, a bolt hole, a nightmare?
As tired city dwellers set off in search of the peace and quiet of the country Modern Times ponders the joys, pains and absurdities of the weekend cottage.
Seven contrasting families describe their on-off love affairs with their rural retreats, a place to which they escape every Friday night in the hope that they will have two days of the quiet life. For some, the weekly escape is a nightmare of planning, while for teenagers the country is a place lacking in fun.
One couple found their country caravan such a relief that they didn't tell their teenage sons where it was for four years. And there's businessman Ivan, for whom the weekend means virtually a change of personality. He trades his Ferrari for a Morris Minor, changes his name to Ken and converts his dog Sasha to country pooch Colin.
