The familiar Old Testament story ends with the return of the Jews from Babylon - to a new Jerusalem and a new Temple. The last of the ' BC ' series takes the story of the Jews and Judaism further, to the threshold of the Christian era. During Greek and Roman times, Classical cultures vied with Jewish orthodoxy; and the Dead Sea scrolls reveal just how far some Jewish sects had retreated from the cosmopolitan world of Roman client-kings like Herod.
