The Wednesday Play: On the Eve of Publication

on BBC One London

by David Mercer
Starring Leo McKern as Robert Kelvin and Thorley Walters as Holland
with Michele Dotrice as Emma

The dramatic impetus to tonight's intriguing and mysterious play is provided by the memory and fantasies of Robert Kelvin, an illustrious and ageing novelist. These are triggered off by the love that Emma, a beautiful young girl almost forty years his junior, is offering him. His inability to respond any more to Emma than to the other two women in his life adds all the more to the agony of the play's powerful climax.

"Hallelujah wasn't it wonderful" (Sun)
"Leo McKern... one of the great performances of the year" (Daily Express)
"McKern, masterly, gritty, superb" (Financial Times)
