An excerpt from "Sailor Beware"
One of the most successful comedies for many years has undoubtedly been Sailor Beware, which last month celebrated its second anniversary at the Strand Theatre. It introduced to the West End a comparatively unknown repertory actress, Peggy Mount, and overnight brought her stardom in the role of Emma Hornett. As the all-powerful, all-dominating Mother who rules the Hornetts' nest with a voice of thunder she can strike terror into the heart of any would-be suitor for her daughter, Shirley, especially if, as in this case, he happens to be a sailor...
Both Peggy Mount, and her stage husband, Cyril Smith, appeared in the highly successful film version of Sailor Beware, and tonight's theatre excerpt should give viewers a good idea why this hilarious comedy is nearing its 1,000th performance.
From the Strand Theatre at 7.35
