on BBC Two England

John FitzMaurice Mills looks at techniques used by artists through the ages.
Today he reports on materials used to mix tempera paints in Medieval times, including natural gums, glues, milk and egg yolks. Another early technique was developed by fresco painters who painted in wet plaster. The painters had to be very sure of what they were doing, however, as mistakes had to be chiselled out afterwards.
