on BBC Two England

(1881-1981)
A series of programmes about the life and music of the Hungarian composer seen through his six string quartets.
Introduced by YEIDTDI MENUHIN String Quartet No 5 (1934)
This quartet, written at the height of Bartok's researches into Hungarian folk music, proved a source of great inspiration to him. It effectively contrasts tough, earthy rhythms with ethereal, wispy ' night music'. played by the Lindsay String Quartet Peter Cropper (violin) Ronald Birks (violin) Roger Bigley (viola)
