Composer of the Week: Schumann

on BBC Radio 3

The final selection from the marriage diaries of Robert and Clara Schumann, read by actors Juliet Stevenson and James Fleet.

Clara tries out Robert's new Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra, with Mendelssohn conducting the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Two weeks later, she and Robert celebrate the birth of their first child, and soon after, Clara gives a spectacular concert with the visiting Liszt - whose skills as a womaniser, bon viveur and phenomenal pianist are soon overwhelmingly confirmed.

Today's programme features further songs from Myrthen, plus:
Piano Concerto in A minor (1st mvt) Radu Lupu, London Symphony Orchestra, conductor Andre Previn
Noye Metten, Op 21: Nos 3. 4, 6 and 7 Claudio Arrau (piano)
(Repeated next Friday 11.30pm)
