In 1956, as Elvis Presley topped the pop charts and Duke Ellington captivated audiences at the Newport Jazz Festival, innovative artists were emerging to develop new directions in jazz. Pre-eminent among them were saxophonist Sonny Rollins and Miles Davis, the trumpeter whose 1959 album Kind of Blue was to become the bestselling jazz album of all time.
