The occasion is described by Alec Robertson.
'Mr. Halle's Band' formed for the Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition of 1857, gave the opening concert of their first season in the newly built Free Trade Hall on January 30, 1858. Tonight, at the invitation of the Halle Concerts Society, in association with the Arts Council of Great Britain and the Corporation of Manchester, in a new Free Trade Hall built seven years ago on the same site, the orchestra with their famous conductor and a distinguished soloist celebrate this century of achievement.
