At the Top of the Mountain Tripitaka is distressed by a nightmare about his mother. To reassure him Monkey volunteers to fly back to Chang-an. But instead of luxury and banquets he finds poverty and hardship, and Tripitaka's mother on her deathbed. To save the pilgrimage to India, Monkey has to resort to desperate measures.
