Balanchine Festival
Anthony Dowell introduces two ballets by GEORGE BALANCHINE danced by the New York City Ballet
Serenade
Created in 1934 when Balanchine went to America, this ballet came to life in the classes of the School of American Ballet where Balanchine choreographed various sections to fit the number of pupils present. Set to TCHAIKOVSKY'S 'Serenade for Strings ', it captures perfectly the romantic and elegiac quality of the music. Soloists
Karin von Aroldingen, Susan Hendl Sara Leland , Kay Mazzo Jean-Pierre Bonnefous Peter Martins Episodes
Premiered in 1959, this ballet is in four movements to music by WEBERN. It is another example of Balanchine's understanding of the music he works with, his ability to reflect, almost to ' visualise ' the score. In contrast to the romantic Serenade, this is a work of Balanchine's modern classicism. Soloists
Sara Leland , Anthony Blum Karin von Aroldingen
Frank Ohman , Allegra Kent Bart Cook , Renee Estopinal David Richardson
Serenade director HUGO NIEBELING Episodes director KLAUS LINDEMANN RM PRODUCTIONS, Munich
