Exiles

on BBC Two England

Miriam Makeba
South African Singer
Miriam Makeba has been exiled from South Africa for nearly 30 years. During that time she has become the first African singer to establish an international reputation, as well as becoming a potent symbol of the fight against apartheid.
In this film Makeba talks revealingly about her early life in the district now called Soweto and her triumphant debut in the USA in 1960. She describes her involvement in the anti-apartheid movement and her subsequent exile from her homeland. She talks about her deep conviction that one day she will return to live in a de-segregated South Africa.
