This new series opens with Richard Alston's Pulcinella performed by Rambert Dance Company
Music Igor Stravinsky
Designer Howard Hodgkin
Pulcinella is set in Naples. The story features two pairs of bored lovers, an awfully sudden 'death', a handful of ghosts and at the centre of it, the quick-witted Pulcinella and his long-suffering wife, Pimpinella.
Pulcinella was commissioned by Diaghilev for his Ballet Russe in 1920, and has a score by Igor Stravinsky. For his version, Richard Alston asked English painter Howard Hodgkin to design sets and costumes.
