The second of two feature films starring Charlton Heston with Laurence Olivier Richard Johnson Ralph Richardson
1883. A British colonel and his Egyptian army have been routed in the Sudan by the fanatical followers of a religious zealot-the Mahdi. A reluctant Prime Minister Gladstone sends General Gordon to Khartoum with a brief to evacuate Egyptian nationals trapped by the Mahdi's advance. As the capital is besieged, a battle of wills develops between Gordon and the Mahdi, each a visionary in his own cause, neither willing to budge from his principles....
