Slave Island

on BBC Two England

Until slavery was abolished in 1827, thousands of imported Africans helped to build New York City before being buried and forgotten. In 1991 a huge burial ground containing human remains, dating from the 17th century, was found between Manhattan's skyscrapers and City Hall. Julian Richards unravels the history of slave labour in America and the freedom struggle behind this remarkable discovery in a Meet the Ancestors special.
