How do fathers and their children cope with the loss of a mother through separation or death? Three single parent families are followed over the course of a year, providing an intimate insight into what happens when men are left holding the baby.
Carl lost his wife Becky to cancer in 2002, leaving him to bring up his lively 12-year-old daughter Naomi by himself. John's wife left him and their three young children to pursue a career. Forty-year-old Piers's wife Marilyn died soon after she gave birth to their second child, leaving him to cope with bereavement, a new-born baby and a two-year-old daughter. Can these men really provide the nurture and support traditionally associated with motherhood?
