In a fifth-century confrontation St Patrick is said to have asked Oisin - hero of ancient Irish mythology to mortify himself and prepare for the next world. But Oisin, aged poet and playboy of the pagan world, continued to launch into a lyrical and sometimes comic exultation of the beauties and pleasures of this world.
