Over the last decade, several thousand employees have lost their jobs because of "downsizing" - the practice of contracting workforce with the aim of being more efficient and profitable.
Richard Watson investigates the trend, asking whether the rush for short-term gain has damaged industry's long-term effectiveness and whether people have needlessly been made redundant.
