A series of six films on the growth of the new nationalism in Europe. 3: The Valdotains
Val d'Aosta is one of the accidents of high diplomacy. It is French-speaking, but became part of a united Italy in 1860. Although allied with the French Maquis against Fascism, the Valdotains were made to remain Italian after World War II. They have local autonomy and official bilingualism, but successive waves of immigrant workers from the south carry a greater threat than Mussolini's army. Series devised and presented by George Reid
