This three-part Assignment Special looks at the long-term future of Europe.

The first programme asks whether a new nation is being forged in spite of recent setbacks. Are the British already halfway to being good European citizens? Francine Stock talks to the French in Spain, Danes in Italy, and Africans desperately knocking at the door. She questions the soldiers of the Franco-German brigade, a model perhaps for the European army of the future. Would they pass the ultimate test of citizenship and die for Europe?
