International Golf: The 1971 United States PGA Championship

on BBC Two England

(Holder Dave Stockton) played at the National Golf Club, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
For the first time in its long history the PGA - one of the world's classic tournaments - has been moved from its traditional autumn placing at the end of the season. The rearranged date has meant much early-season application by all the established stars of the American circuit.
For Arnold Palmer this Championship represents a personal ambition, being the only major title that has eluded him; and the US Open Champion, Tony Jacklin, has recently returned to the US to play in the tournament. They regard this first title challenge of the season as a valuable psychological springboard towards the glittering rewards of the US Masters and the US Open to be played in April and June respectively.
