Busting the Green Belt
Presented by Jeremy Paxman For 30 years the green belt has provided a vital breathing space around
London, preventing the south east from becoming one giant urban sprawl. But has it now outlived its usefulness? Has it forced house prices up to unattainable levels, and is it now strangling new job-creating industry?
This month a crucial public inquiry opens in Essex to judge plans for a new country town. If it gets the go-ahead, the green belt could be busted and the country's house-building policy radically changed.
Richard Bath reports on the debate now raging and, in the studio, house builders, house buyers and conservationists argue the issues. Producer FIONA CHESTERTON
