2: Death in the Drinking Water
In the days of Queen Victoria the great industrial cities of Britain were rich, but behind the scenes in the dark back streets, thousands of poor people died from the fever', cholera. Few people cared, but young Edwin Chadwick , a civil servant, fought long and hard for new laws that would ensure pure drinking water and proper drains in every city street. Today JOHN CRAVEN travels down London's river in a floating laboratory to tell Chadwick's story.
