Beyond the Edge
From the precipices of St Kilda, the sheer walls of Moher in Ireland to the low, crumbling slopes of East Anglia, the sea cliffs of the British Isles embellish an already spectacularly varied coast-line.
But the dramatic results of this confrontation between land and sea concern more than just the scenery.
On remote beaches isolated by headlands and towering cliffs, clinging to ledges and in secret caves warmed by the sea, plants and animals find a natural haven. Beyond the edge of the land in these unfenced natural reserves grow wild asparagus and tree mallow and other plants more at home abroad; goats and bats find refuge and the aerobatic chough, soaring buzzard, black-cloaked raven and rapacious peregrine breed undisturbed.
