The Lively Arts

on BBC Two England

Introduced by Melvyn Bragg Refugees Reflect
In tonight's programme we have brought together two people who are both refugees from repressive regimes. Each is involved in the arts. Milos Kirek is a Czech actor. He left Prague in 1968 after the Russian invasion. Charles Elsesser is a Chilean film-maker and TV producer. He and his family managed to escape from Chile after the overthrow of President Allende's government.
MILOS KIREK : 'It's one of the ironies of the situation of being an actor in England, coming here because of the Russian invasion and earning my living playing Russians.'
CHARLES ELSESSER: 'Artists are not really good for belonging to a certain party. We are - a fly in the ointment.'
