The most important thing in the life of engine-driver Jacques Lantier is the locomotive on which he lavishes a tender affection. But when he meets Severine, the beautiful young wife of Roubaud, stationmaster at Le Havre, their destinies become tragically linked, for Lantier is possessed by an uncontrollable compulsion to murder women.
