A young woman is found murdered on the overnight express from Marseilles. As Grazzi of the Paris police tries to track down the people who travelled with her, it becomes apparent that someone else is hunting them, toe-the killer.
The first film by French director Costa-Gavras is a fast-moving police thriller in the taut style of American films of the 40s, but without the political overtones of the director's subsequent work.
