The opera depicts the political strife and turbulent turning point in Russia's history in the late 17th century as it struggled from old beliefs to new during the time of Peter the Great.

Orchestra, and the cast is led by the great Bulgarian bass, Nicolai Ghiaurov , as Prince Ivan Khovansky and Paata Burchuladze , the bass from Georgia, sings Dosifey, the leader of the reactionary Old Believers.
