A series of eight films about Britain from 1945 to 1951. 1: Goodbye to All That
It's 1945 and the troops come home. Families get back together, but behind the joy of reunion lies a quiet resolve.
We were looking for a more democratic Britain, a less oppressive Britain. We allfelt about ten feet tall and thought we'd a right to share in the goodies.
(A LANCE BOMBARDIER)
The programme flashes back to the war to trace the origins of the new political mood.
The 1945 election brings in a Labour government. One of the first tasks is to demobilise five million service men and women. There are tales of demob suits, and people remember the difficulty of being a wife, husband or father again after six years of war.
