Ines de Castro

on BBC Two England

Scottish Opera's production of James MacMillan's first full-length opera, recorded at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow last summer. Introduced by Muriel Gray, in conversation with the composer, director Jonathan Moore and Richard Armstrong, the musical director of Scottish Opera.

Inspired by historical events, the opera tells the story of the doomed love affair between Pedro, Crown Prince of Portugal, and his Spanish mistress Ines. When their two countries go to war, the lovers' relationship is ended with shocking brutality. As the music reaches monumental power and beauty, the action builds to a horrifying climax.
